Vintage Candy 101

Hi Everyone!

I have wanted to do a post about this particular subject for awhile, and what better time than now!

When I was young, summertime was about playing outside, going to the library, occasionally going to see a movie, and penny candy!!!!

I have been a major sugar consumer since I was a toddler, oddly enough I was a real hyper kid…hmmm I wonder if there is a correlation there! :)

Those of you who have been with me for awhile already know I get real upset when people mess with my childhood candies! :) :)

So I wanted to show you some of my favorites, some are gone but some are still around. The first one is Bonomo’s Turkish Taffy.

Who of us that are in their 50’s and 60’s now can’t remember this wonderful candy? It came in vanilla, my favorite, chocolate and strawberry. The best way to eat it was to freeze it or refrigerate it and then smack it on the ground! I can taste it now. Sadly, it is an item from the past…but there is good news! There is a new kind made by a different company and it is identical! AAAAAi75WzwAAAAAAOjxwA

And they have banana, if that is to your liking…..I have found it at Cracker Barrel Restaurant, in their general stores….it is expensive in my opinion, but worth every penny! :)

I am sure it is online also. It is called Doscher’s French Chew.

Another one was the traditional candy necklace.

They weren’t Smarties in a different form, they weren’t sour ( Yuk!) and they were hard on the outside and white on the inside. They tasted much better….I have only found them once and they were not perfect but better than most and guess what? It was in Wisconsin! And do you think I can remember where?????

My third choice for today’s post is …

Candy Buttons!!!!!

LtboxButtonCandy

My cousin and I would have contests to see who could eat one large sheet first….I always won! :)

They used to be a penny, you got one long sheet with two sets of candy buttons. Now they are over 1.50 for six sheets….count them…six. :(

I will be doing posts all summer long about my nostalgia over candy, it bring out the kid in all of us!

And don’t forget….

They are still putting out that new crap! But I have a stash of the old! :)

Thanks for stopping by, and my next post will be about my giveaway for having become lucky enough to have 200 followers! I am getting things together for the photos tomorrow! :)

Love the old candies, Sandy! So glad you did this, and look forward to more...they just don't make them like they used to!

I loved the candy necklaces, salt water taffy and Necco's...in fact my husband just picked up a package of Necco's for each of us this week at Cracker Barrel Restaurant.

I LOVE this post!! My faves were the candy neclaces and the neccos. My little sister and I would buy the candy neclaces-- we'd wear them, stretch and nibble, and then let that elastic spring back on our necks. They'd leave colors and sticky on our necks, but we loved them! Is this crazy-- I have a candy neclace in the pocket of my purse right now! I see them every once in a while-- my friend gave me mine, but I think I actually saw them at Michaels the other day.
We didn't have the turkish taffy here, but we had a different version-- charleston chews. We'd freeze, and then shatter... yum! I think they're still around.
Anyway, thanks for the walk down memory lane!
Hugs,
Jill

What great memories this post conjures up!
It seems like candy back then had character, know what I mean? There was something special and unique about each brand.

Great post!

Hi Sandi,

this is so fun! I remember them all. I loved turkish Taffy, and so did my dentist! I also ate the rock candy. Remember that? I wanted to do a post about vintage candies too, and a while back I took some pics in the store of the candy they had. It's called 5 Below, and they have all the nostalgic candies in there! Fun post!

Oh YES...I do remember penny candy. Mom would take us girls to the dime store and for our 25 cent allowance we had a week's worth of treats. I do love the chocolate and banana taffy :) Some of the penny candy had 3-4 pieces. Oh...the good old days!
Warmly,
Deb :)

Their is a cute really cute vintage candy store down town, called Smeeks, that sells all the neat candy!!!!!

Those candy buttons and the taffy that came in a sheet were my favorites. We had an old fashioned general store next door. I loved going over there and buying this stuff!

Thanks for reminding me of my favorite memories.

Hugs...Tracy :)
