The Haboob that ate Phoenix!

Have you ever heard of a Haboob?  It is a massive dust/sand storm, and we had one here in Phoenix just the other day….this is video I got off of You tube and it is pretty precise……we came out of a hospital here in the East Valley and were just amazed at what was coming out way!  Oddly, we didn’t get much of it at our house, but it was still nasty, my friend Cheri had it hit at her house and she said it went from daylight to dark in seconds!  We have had these before here, but this one was 55 miles wide  and a mile high!!!   Enjoy! This is time lapse photography…….

My parents used to have these when they lived in New Mexico. Although this looks more like a tsunami. Glad you are doing okay...smiles...Renee

Wow ! Glad you OK and not affected by it, I was wondering about you. This is a quirk of nature I knew nothing about, sure interesting to watch don't think I'd enjoy being in one though :) E

No I have never heard of this name Haboob. Reminds me of the dust bowl days.

I lived in the Middle East for three years and witnessed many haboobs. Once while visiting my parents who were living in Scottsdale, there was a big sandstorm and just as you said, the sky went from bright to gray instantly. Even though the windows of the house were closed, Mom and I had lots of dusting to do!

Thank goodness you weren't affected by this. That would be daunting to see that coming.

When I saw that video on TV I just was amazed. It reminded me of when Mt. St. Helen's blew her lid and Yakima, WA turned from day to night with ash. But your storm came so fast!! I'm glad you are OK and not effected very much.

I remember being on vacation in Phoenix with my parents when I was little, and I was swimming in the motel pool when one of these happened. I was terrified, and luckily my Dad was able to grab me out of the pool and run back into the motel room, because I couldn't see a thing!
Happy Weekend,

How scary. I guess that's what they had during the dust bowl years here.

Hi Sandy - I thought of you when I saw the storm on youtube. WOW! We have the sandstorms here, too in the Coachella Valley - but not that BIG!!! I keep thinking, my house is dusty as it is - what was it like after that monster storm?
