Let’s wrap this up!

I have had such fun reading all of your comments about your own memories of penny candy and where you got it…..

For me it was a small corner grocery store in Eau Claire. You know, the one that most neighborhoods had back in the day…..

The one I went to was only known to me as “Stangies”…I guess it was his name. It was a tiny place on the corner of Broadway and 5th Ave.

It had one of those wonderful screen doors with the 7-Up metal sign on it, and old wooden floors. The penny candy was behind the register and so was Stangie…..he got tired of helping me and my cousin Jan, so he finally let us back there…..I took my eldest son back to Eau Claire last year, and I walked the route to that store with him…it was surreal…..going past 521 Lake Street via the alley, seeing the place where a playground used to be in a schoolyard that we played at all of the time, the building is now condos…but it looks the same. The grocery store is long gone, but not the building…here it is today:

The steps are concrete now, they used to be wood….I can’t explain how odd it is to see my son Bryan in front of this building!

So here is to the candy store, and the little grocery stores and the wonderful memories we all have…..one more hurrah!

Who of you remember the lemon Tootsie Pops???? My favorites were these and orange ones, and of course cherry!!!!!

Vintage Candy Part 3

One of the candies that all little girls liked when I was young was candy lipstick….it was in a cellophane wrapper with gold paper around it. It was chalky, and messy but tasted so good! I never had the patience to put it on as lipstick, it just vanished when I bought it :)

My friend Cheri and me have looked for this product for years, I was on the internet getting photos for my posts when I saw this:

This is exactly what they looked like! Now, the person who had the website stated that these were different as they are now a taffy substance, but are the same flavor as we all remember… so I am going to see if that is true…..

The poor kids in the generations after us got items like these:

Hard, gritty Smartie like stuff…. I feel for them, having never had a mess of pink goo painted around their mouth!

Vintage Candy 101 Part 2

OK…this post probably wouldn’t have happened but….well you’ll see! :)

One of my favorite things to do after my folks grilled outside was to roast marshmallows. We weren’t a camping family, so that is how I had to do it.

Even people that normally don’t like marshmallows will enjoy them roasted!

Wayne and I were at the last home town grocery chain in AZ, it is called Basha’s. We try to stop there at least a couple times a month to help keep it going. And right up front they had a summer candy display, I kid you not! :)

I spotted these marshmallows and they brought back all kinds of memories….you remember Campfire Marshmallows????

Well, these are them, but they are just a little different….how you say???

They look the same, right????? Ahhh…not quite. Are you ready?????

These are called GIANT Roasters, and they aren’t kidding!!!!! No more having to put two on at once! This baby is enough for three people! LOL

I know when whoever drew this they were exaggerating, but it has come to pass! A marshmallow that is too big!!!! When is enough enough????? Even I think this is overload! :) :) :)

Vintage Candy 101

Hi Everyone!

I have wanted to do a post about this particular subject for awhile, and what better time than now!

When I was young, summertime was about playing outside, going to the library, occasionally going to see a movie, and penny candy!!!!

I have been a major sugar consumer since I was a toddler, oddly enough I was a real hyper kid…hmmm I wonder if there is a correlation there! :)

Those of you who have been with me for awhile already know I get real upset when people mess with my childhood candies! :) :)

So I wanted to show you some of my favorites, some are gone but some are still around. The first one is Bonomo’s Turkish Taffy.

Who of us that are in their 50’s and 60’s now can’t remember this wonderful candy? It came in vanilla, my favorite, chocolate and strawberry. The best way to eat it was to freeze it or refrigerate it and then smack it on the ground! I can taste it now. Sadly, it is an item from the past…but there is good news! There is a new kind made by a different company and it is identical!

And they have banana, if that is to your liking…..I have found it at Cracker Barrel Restaurant, in their general stores….it is expensive in my opinion, but worth every penny! :)

I am sure it is online also. It is called Doscher’s French Chew.

Another one was the traditional candy necklace.

They weren’t Smarties in a different form, they weren’t sour ( Yuk!) and they were hard on the outside and white on the inside. They tasted much better….I have only found them once and they were not perfect but better than most and guess what? It was in Wisconsin! And do you think I can remember where?????

My third choice for today’s post is …

Candy Buttons!!!!!

My cousin and I would have contests to see who could eat one large sheet first….I always won! :)

They used to be a penny, you got one long sheet with two sets of candy buttons. Now they are over 1.50 for six sheets….count them…six. :(

I will be doing posts all summer long about my nostalgia over candy, it bring out the kid in all of us!

And don’t forget….

They are still putting out that new crap! But I have a stash of the old! :)

Do I glow in the Dark now???

I have always had a serious addiction to candy...it started when I was very young, and I still love the "holiday candies" that come out each year. This year I found a new one!!!! When I bought these, the clerk said "Do you think they glow in the dark?, I am not sure I would eat them if they glow in the dark..." little does she know most of us already do glow in the dark ! :) They also came out with one that looks like little candy corn Dots....I just had to share these....there are those of you out there that will see this post and not be surprised by my discovery :) Have a great week!
