As most of you know, I came from small town roots, and one of my most precious memories is getting to be able to go to Eau Claire every summer for vacation, and occasionally lucky enough to get there for Christmas. One of those memories that is crystal clear is my cousin Jan and I heading to Stangie’s Grocery store for penny candy every day.
I had a very sweet woman named Lori Schmidt of Evergreen Graphics find my blog. She emailed me and asked me to give her a call and see if I would be interested in being in a little magazine called Chippewa Valley’s Hidden Treasures. I called her and it was like we knew each other for years, in fact when I go back later this spring to Eau Claire we are going to get together…but I digress…. she asked me to write down a few paragraphs about Stangie’s and his store and my memories and told me she would have a writer get it in shape for an article. I sent her an email and hoped she liked it. Well, I guess she did, because she changed a few grammatical errors and printed as I wrote it….so, come on back in time with me and think of your favorite childhood candy….
Thanks for all of the interest in being getting published….I know it is nothing huge, but for me to have these memories in print is so wonderful! Thank you Lori and I hope to meet you soon!

ReplyDeleteOh how this takes me back to the "dime store" my sister and I used to visit as children. I grew up in a small town and we were allowed to walk uptown, all my ourselves.

Oh Sandy! I felt like I was right there with you. The last store in our small town like that closed when I was bout 3 or 4, but I can still kind of remember it. Such charming reminiscences.

How awesome is that! For memories to come alive again. I miss the candy cigs, isn't that terrible but in those years, they made me feel so grown up. I remember how I copied my mom holding her cig with her pretty long nails. When I was growing up in the 60's it was cool for parents to smoke.

ReplyDeleteIt was so fun to read your article! What a thrill it must have been to be published. I dream of that some day. It just took me back in time (and you know how I love that!). In my hometown, where I still live we took our change to the West Side Food Market, where we bought our penny candy. My favorite was the gummy coins that were cherry flavored. We actually got 2 for a dollar! They would put them in small brown paper bags for us. Sadly, it's no longer open, but I sure have good memories of it's wooden floors and cozy interior. Thanks for taking me back!

How cool is that, congrats on being published! Oh boy do I remember penny candy and those candy lipsticks! My fav was Bonomo Turkish Taffy. This past Christmas while shopping on Amazon, I discovered it was still being made so of course I HAD to order some. And it STILL tastes just as good. Thanks for sharing your memories, hugs, Nan
ReplyDeleteThis is a great post! Where we vacation in Michigan my grandfather's best friend owned Barney's grocery. It is my fondest memory getting penny candy. The town honored him, he made such an impact on people.
